NEWS : Haunting Mr Hudson

Mr Hudson2

With Supernova going straight in at No.2, White Lies all over radio and the Kanye West approved albumStraight No Chaser on the way, Mr Hudson seems pretty fearless. Well all that changed when RWD took him to West Smithfield’s Saint Bartholomew the Great, one of London’s oldest and most haunted churches. Paranormal exploration by Danny Walker photographic evidence captured by James Pearson-Howes recorded ghostly documentation by Greg Bond and Reuben Fagan sandwiches made by Rajveer Kathwadia

So we wanted to, as Hattie Collins put it in the planning stages, ‘literally turn Mr Hudson’s hair white,’ by shocking and scaring him beyond belief. But with Ben Hudson’s locks already near neutral and considering he’s previously released Ghosts on the A Tale of Two Cities album, we knew it was going to be hard. But RWD like a challenge and the ghosts of Saint Bartholomew the Great were just that…

Mr Hudson are you ready to go ghost hunt, like you’ve never ghost hunted before…

It makes sense, it feels right.

Are you’re OK with us trying to scare you…turn your hair white.

[Laughs].

Are you a supernatural sceptic or a beyond the grave believer?

I’m a scientist.

[At this point Mr Hudson and I go on our ghost hunting expedition with Saint Bartholomew the Great’s Rector Dr Martin Dudley]

So Dr Martin Dudley there’s talk of this church being one of the most haunted places in London?

DrMD: Well, I don’t know about that, but I do know it can get very cold sometimes in here.

Isn’t that coldness a sign of a ghost?

DrMD: Well, that’s when I decide to go [laughs].

MrH: What do you do?

DrMD: I just lock the door, say goodnight and let them get on with it. There is talk of Prior Rahere [the founder of the church who is buried next to the alter] appearing at the church and at the hospital – particularly when people are dying – and the sound of footsteps.

MrH: A lot of people had a debt to him?

DrMD: Yeah, he is part of the hierarchy. God, then St. Bartholomew, then Prior Rahere.

Have you ever seen a ghost?

DrMD: I’ve been here for 14 years and I haven’t seen anything. One night though the burglar alarm went off. And so our Verger, John, came down and he opened the door, which is the other side of here [points to big scary door] and he heard footsteps going down the church. He called out, ‘Identify yourself?’ and the footsteps stopped. When the police came, there was nobody here.

MrH: Any other stories, cos this place has a lot of atmosphere. It’s got a vibe.

DrMD: Another night we looked after a body in the Lady Chapel and the alarm went off at night. Where was the alarm? In the Lady Chapel? What’s going on? Do the dead talk to each other at night… I don’t know, but it was very strange.

And we hear that one night someone saw a mysterious figure?

DrMD: Yes. It was right there [we look on in fright]. We thought we’d locked someone in – which we’ve done before [chuckles as we look on in horror] – but a Verger saw a figure in Elizabethan fancy dress. At that point he left.

MrH: What happens in there [Mr Hudson points to the darkest corridor of all time]… Is anyone up here?

[To Hudson] You can go first…

MrH: I make beats and I sing, I’m not a Ghostbuster bruv.

DrMD: That’s the gallery [the spooky gallery] we don’t really know the purpose of them.

MrH: Do you go up there much?

DrMD: Not very much, no [laughs].

[After the tour we’re left to explore]

So Mr Mr Hudson, what does make you scared?

Fighting, I’m not very good at fighting. I’m good at making beats and not hand-to-hand combat.

[Rajveer Kathwadia shouts] Time?

Yeah, I’m afraid of running out of time. There are not enough hours in the day.

How would you compare Straight No Chaser to Tale of Two Cities?

I think Straight No Chaser is a little bit of grown man business. In hindsight Tale of Two Cities was a little bit experimental and for me the biggest difference is that it’s quieter and less processed. Often it’s just the sound of kick and snare and vocals and that’s it. We just kind of recorded it and this album is more produced. It’s widescreen, HD, surround sound, kick you in the nuts Mr Hudson.

What was your favourite track?

Well actually the title track, Straight No Chaser kind of reminds me of driving round LA in a stupidly big car, bumping the tunes. I’ve never been to Miami and it reminds me of that.

How are you embracing your fame?

It’s funny actually as I was walking down Carnaby Street today and this young lady was like, ‘You’re Mr Hudson.’ ‘I am. Who are you?’ She introduced herself and we went for a coffee. You know, this is a pretty tough gig.

Sounds like you’re inviting more ladies to come up to you.

It’s good, it’s such a novelty at the moment and I’m really enjoying meeting new people and travelling.

Speaking of ladies, I’m just going to throw some names out there…

Barbara Windsor?

Fearne Cotton?

Helen Mirren?

Rihanna?

Katy Perry? Margaret Thatcher?

Are there any ladies that you’re holding a candle for?

I’m flying solo mate. I haven’t got time. I’m promoting the record, we put so much work into the album, I need to make sure it gets a decent, you know… crack of the whip. I want people to listen to it so it’s getting all my attention. I’m a one-man promotion machine at the moment. There is not a lot of time for wining and dining. But, you know – the door is ajar [laughs].

How involved is Kanye in this project?

You know, he’s a busy boy. He’s been helping out a lot of people. He spends a lot of his time helping others and that’s an important thing to remember when people are throwing rocks at him, just for speaking his mind occasionally. He does a lot of work for charity and he helps out a few struggling… shit I needed his help man; I’m not going to lie. He doesn’t trouble me too much. He’s doesn’t mind leaving me up to my own devices.

Oh No!!! What… What the HELL is that…

Oh my days!!!

[The interview is stopped short as a ghostly shape appears next to Mr Hudson]…
